What Is Brava Synthetic Roofing?

An honest overview of composite cedar shake tiles for Idaho homeowners.

All Articles

Most homeowners in North Idaho end up choosing between two things when it is time for a new roof: asphalt shingles or metal panels. Those are both solid choices. But there is a third option that does not get nearly enough attention, and it sits in an interesting spot between the two. It is called Brava, and their Cedar Shake line is what we want to talk about here.

Brava makes composite roofing tiles from recycled materials. We are talking post-consumer plastics and natural mineral pigments. The tiles are engineered to look like real cedar shake from the street. And they do. Your neighbor walking by is not going to know the difference. But under the surface, they are a completely different product than real wood. They will not rot. They will not split. They will not need painting or staining every few years. They just sit there and do their job.

The Cedar Shake line is the one we install most. We chose it because it solves a real problem for people around here. A lot of homeowners in Coeur d'Alene, Hayden, and the surrounding areas love the look of cedar shake. It fits. It looks like it belongs on a mountain home. But real cedar comes with a list of headaches that most people do not want to deal with once they hear the full picture. Brava gives you the look without any of that.

The Specs That Actually Matter

Numbers first. Brava Cedar Shake carries a Class A fire rating, which is the highest you can get. It also has a Class 4 impact resistance rating, also the highest. And it is wind rated to 110 plus mph. Those are not marketing numbers. Those are tested and certified ratings that mean something when you are filing an insurance claim or trying to meet building codes in fire prone areas.

The fire rating is the big one for us in North Idaho. If you have lived here through a few summers, you know how real wildfire risk is. Smoke from fires in Montana, Washington, or right here in Idaho fills the valley almost every August. Real cedar shake on your roof in a wildfire zone is a genuine concern. Burning embers land on wood and you have a problem. Brava is noncombustible. That Class A rating means embers landing on your roof are not going to ignite it. For people living anywhere near the wildland urban interface, that alone is worth paying attention to.

Weight: Why It Matters More Than You Think

Here is something people do not think about until we bring it up. A single Brava tile weighs about 1.5 pounds. A real cedar shake tile weighs 5 pounds or more. That is a big difference when you multiply it across an entire roof.

Less weight means less structural load on your home. That matters for older homes or lighter framing where adding weight could mean needing structural reinforcement. With Brava, you get the cedar shake look at a fraction of the weight. In most cases, your existing roof structure can handle it without any modifications. That saves money and keeps the project simpler.

Color That Goes All the Way Through

Brava offers multiple natural cedar tones, from lighter weathered shades to darker rich browns. But the thing that sets them apart from a lot of competitors is how the color is done. They use mineral based pigments that go through the full thickness of the tile. The color is not just painted or coated on the surface. It is part of the tile itself.

That means if the tile ever gets scratched or chipped, you are not going to see a different color underneath. It also means the color resists fading over time. UV exposure in North Idaho is real. We get a lot of sun in the summer, and at this elevation it is more intense than people expect. A surface level coating will fade. Pigment that goes all the way through holds up much longer. You can see the full range of colors and get into the details on our Brava Cedar Shake product page.

How Long Does It Last?

Brava backs their tiles with a limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturer. In practical terms, you are looking at a realistic life expectancy of 50 plus years. That is a long time. Compare that to 25 to 30 years for architectural shingles and you start to see where the long term value comes in.

North Idaho is hard on roofs. The composite material does not absorb water the way real wood does, so freeze and thaw cycles do not cause the cracking and splitting that kills real cedar over time. Snow load is not a concern either. These tiles are engineered to handle it.

Let Us Talk Money

Brava is not cheap. We are going to be straight about that. It costs more than architectural shingles and lands in a similar range as standing seam metal. The exact number depends on your roof's size, pitch, and complexity. If you want to see how all three materials stack up side by side, our materials comparison page breaks down the differences.

The difference is what happens after install. Real cedar needs to be treated, stained, or sealed every few years. Over 20 or 30 years, those maintenance costs add up fast. Brava needs none of that. You install it and walk away. When you zoom out and look at the total cost of ownership over the life of the roof, Brava starts to look a lot more reasonable.

We put together a satellite roof calculator where you can input your address, select Brava as the material, and get a realistic rough estimate of what it would cost on your specific home. Takes about a minute and there is no phone call required.

Who Is Brava Good For?

Brava makes the most sense for a few specific types of homeowners. If you love the cedar shake look but you do not want to deal with the upkeep, this is your product. Real cedar needs regular attention. Brava does not. That is a trade a lot of people are happy to make.

If you live in or near a wildfire zone, Brava solves the problem of wanting a wood look on a roof where real wood is risky. Parts of Rathdrum, Athol, areas around Hayden Lake, and much of the corridor between Coeur d'Alene and Sandpoint all have elevated fire risk. Brava gives you the mountain home look with Class A fire protection.

If you have an older home where weight is a concern, Brava is worth looking at. At about a third of the weight of real cedar, it is much easier on your structure. You may not need any of the reinforcement work that real cedar or even some heavier roofing materials would require.

And if you just want something different, Brava fits there too. Most homes in our area have either shingles or metal. Brava gives you a third option that stands out without being flashy. It looks natural. It looks like it belongs here. And most people driving by your house will assume it is real wood.

Who Is Brava Not For?

Brava is not for everyone, and we are not going to pretend it is. If you are on a tight budget, architectural shingles will serve you well for decades. There is nothing wrong with that choice. A well installed shingle roof protects your home just fine. We are not going to talk you into spending more than makes sense for your situation.

If the cedar shake look is not something you care about, there is no reason to pay for it. Metal roofing gives you a similar lifespan and its own set of advantages. It comes down to what you want your house to look like and what matters most to you.

Our honest take: If you want the look of natural wood without the headaches, Brava is hard to beat. But if budget is your main concern, shingles are still a great roof. We install all three and make the same margin either way. We just want you to pick the right one for your house.

Why It Fits North Idaho

There is a reason cedar shake has been popular up here for decades. It fits the landscape. Homes in the mountains, homes near the lake, cabins on acreage. Cedar looks right. The problem is that real cedar and North Idaho weather do not always get along. The wet winters cause rot. The dry summers cause cracking. The fire risk makes insurance companies nervous. And the maintenance never ends.

Brava solves every one of those problems while keeping the look that people want. It handles heavy snow loads without absorbing moisture. It does not crack in the summer heat. It carries a fire rating that will make your insurance company happy instead of worried. And it does all of this for 50 plus years without you having to do anything to it.

We are still a newer company building our name here. The only way we do that is by being straight with people about what works and what does not. Brava is a product we believe in because we have seen the specs, installed the tiles, and watched how they hold up. It is not the right answer for every roof. But when the fit is right, it is a really good option that most homeowners do not even know exists.

If you want to learn more about the product itself, our Brava Cedar Shake page has all the details on colors, specs, and what to expect. Or if you would rather just talk it through, give us a call at (208) 551-1359. We will tell you the same thing we would tell our own family.
